About Parque Natural das Flores e Corvo

Parque Natural das Flores e Corvo encompasses the entire islands of Flores and Corvo, the westernmost parts of the Azores archipelago located in the North Atlantic Ocean. This protected natural park was established to preserve the exceptional volcanic landscapes, rich endemic flora and fauna, and the pristine marine environment surrounding these islands. Flores Island, known for its lush, green landscapes, deep valleys, waterfalls, and volcanic calderas, features remarkable scenery including crater lakes and dense laurel forests. Corvo, the smallest inhabited island in Portugal, is dominated by a large volcanic caldera (Caldeirão) and offers a quieter, intimate natural experience. Both islands serve as important bird sanctuaries, hosting rare species such as the Azores bullfinch and Cory's shearwater, making the park a hotspot for ornithologists and nature lovers. The park invites outdoor enthusiasts to explore well-marked trails winding through varied ecosystems, discover waterfalls and natural pools, and enjoy whale watching and diving in the surrounding Atlantic waters. The marine environment protected here is rich in biodiversity and supports traditional fishing communities. Visitors appreciate the blend of rugged nature, rich cultural heritage, and remote island charm, with highlights including the scenic levadas, volcanic lakes, and the distinctive flora that thrives in the islands’ unique climate. Access to the islands is primarily by ferry or regional flights from mainland Portugal, with local infrastructure supporting eco-tourism and sustainable recreation opportunities.
